Through the desert and countryside of Marocco (November 2025)

Hello all!

One of the things an overlander does, when he is in Morocco, is: driving through deserts and mountain areas. For us that part of the trip through Morocco took approximately 6 weeks and brought us through: the Rif Mountains – the Middle and High Atlas – the Dades Valley – Jbel Saghro – the Anti-Atlas – Erg Chebbi – Oued Draa Valley – the Tafilalt Region – Hamada du Draa – the Western Sahara Desert – the Atlantic Sahara Coast, until we finally arrived in the very south of Morocco, in Al Dakhla.

We experienced beautiful but sometimes harsh stone areas and sand deserts. Here and there we found oases with palm valleys and scattered villages. A lot of camels 😉 There was often a lot of wind, sometimes sandstorms, what is impressive on the one hand but not a great thing on the other (sand everywhere in the truck). We had pleasant warm days and relaxing cold nights in the mountains, same in the desert. You can easily imagine that we found wonderful wild camps to stay overnight (always accompanied – when ‚Magy‘ was around – by a great camp fire). In the morning the desert wakes you with a beautiful sunrise, in the evenings the desert presents great sunsets and at nighttime the big thing is to watch the stars, that works extra well outside in the desert.

The driving was fine, not to challenging at that moment (more to come in ‚Mauretania‘!): Long stretches of piste, sand and stones, with constant shaking. The driving on sand is big fun and sometimes a bit demanding (when driving over sand, essential is: the right tire pressure, keeping proper distance to the vehicle in front of you, anticipatory driving and driving with high momentum – keep your food on the gas!).

For overlanders Morocco is a great country to travel to, definitely to be recommended!
